Taiwanese Investors Eye Southern Tamil Nadu for Next Manufacturing Expansion Beyond Chennai

Taiwanese investors are increasingly looking beyond Chennai and Sriperumbudur as southern Tamil Nadu emerges as a promising destination for the next phase of industrial growth. The renewed interest follows a recent visit by an eight-member Taiwanese delegation to SIPCOT Industrial Park in Tirunelveli and the V. O. Chidambaranar Port in Thoothukudi to evaluate the region’s manufacturing and logistics potential.

According to Stephen S. C. Hsu, Director General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Center (TECC) in Chennai, the visit was aimed at understanding the infrastructure and industrial ecosystem available in southern Tamil Nadu. While the trip was described as a fact-finding exercise, it reflects the growing confidence of Taiwanese manufacturers in the state’s expanding industrial capabilities.

For several years, Taiwanese investments in Tamil Nadu have largely been concentrated around the Chennai-Sriperumbudur manufacturing corridor, driven by strong electronics, footwear, textile and machinery industries. However, companies are now exploring opportunities in high-value sectors including semiconductor supply chain components, electric vehicles, advanced manufacturing and green energy infrastructure.

The shift comes at a time when trade between India and Taiwan continues to strengthen. Bilateral trade reached a record USD 12.5 billion in 2025 and has continued to register healthy growth during 2026. Industry observers believe this momentum could encourage more mid-sized Taiwanese technology companies to establish manufacturing facilities in Tamil Nadu over the next few years.

Tamil Nadu’s strong industrial ecosystem remains one of its biggest advantages. Well-developed industrial parks, efficient port connectivity through Chennai Port and the V. O. Chidambaranar Port, a skilled engineering workforce and investor-friendly policies continue to attract global manufacturers seeking reliable production bases outside traditional markets.

The proposed expansion into southern Tamil Nadu is expected to support regional industrial development while creating high-skilled employment opportunities across Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and neighbouring districts. The region’s growing logistics network and availability of industrial land are also expected to play a key role in attracting future investments.

As global manufacturers diversify their supply chains, southern Tamil Nadu is steadily positioning itself as one of India’s emerging manufacturing destinations. If investment discussions progress as expected, the region could witness a new wave of industrial projects focused on clean energy technologies, electronics manufacturing and electric mobility, further strengthening Tamil Nadu’s leadership in India’s manufacturing sector.
