Hyderabad Metro Rail has achieved significant progress in the development of its much-awaited Old City corridor, with nearly 90 percent of the land acquisition process now completed for the 7.5-km stretch. The project, estimated at ₹2,886 crore, is one of the Telangana government’s key urban infrastructure initiatives aimed at improving connectivity in Hyderabad’s densely populated historic areas.

According to officials, the remaining land acquisition work is expected to be completed by the end of June. A small number of disputed properties, mainly located near Darulshifa, continue to pose challenges for the authorities. Around 10 to 15 properties are reportedly facing family disputes and multiple ownership claims, delaying the final stage of the process.

Officials stated that many of the affected structures are several decades old and carry emotional value for local residents. As a result, the government is adopting a careful and consultative approach instead of pursuing forceful acquisition measures. The focus remains on completing the project while maintaining public confidence and minimising social disruption.

In another important development, Hyderabad Metro Rail has issued a global Request for Proposal to appoint a General Consultant for the Phase II Corridor VI project between MGBS and Chandrayangutta. The consultant will be responsible for supervising construction, testing and commissioning works for the corridor, while Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited will continue to oversee project implementation.

Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has instructed officials to speed up pending procedures and ensure timely execution of the metro project. The Old City Metro corridor is considered a critical infrastructure project for Hyderabad as it is expected to improve public transport accessibility, ease road congestion and support economic activity across the region.

Once operational, the corridor will strengthen Hyderabad’s growing metro network and provide faster, more efficient transit connectivity for thousands of daily commuters in the Old City region.
