Bengaluru Metro Plans 10.5-km Yellow Line Extension to Attibele

Bengaluru’s Yellow Line is set for a proposed extension towards the Tamil Nadu border, with the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited planning a 10.5-km elevated corridor from Bommasandra to Attibele.

The extension is aimed at improving public transport connectivity along the rapidly developing Hosur Road corridor, where residential, industrial and commercial activity has expanded significantly in recent years.

According to the feasibility study prepared by Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited, the proposed extension will have nine stations. The first station is planned near Narayana Institute of Cardiac Sciences, around 1.5 km from the existing Yellow Line terminal at Bommasandra.

The corridor will then serve Chandapura Circle, Hale Chandapura, Thirumagondanahalli, Balagaranahalli, Attibele Industrial Area, Yadavanahalli, Attibele and Attibele Terminal.

The proposed alignment will largely run along the right side of Hosur Road, or National Highway 44. Foot overbridges and subways may be provided wherever necessary to connect the stations with surrounding neighbourhoods.

The move comes as Karnataka continues to examine options for improving metro connectivity towards the Tamil Nadu border. A direct interstate metro connection between Bengaluru and Hosur has also been proposed, but differences between the two states over technical standards, land acquisition and revenue sharing have complicated the integration of the networks.

Bengaluru Metro uses 750V DC third-rail traction, while Tamil Nadu has proposed a 25kV AC overhead system for its planned Hosur-Bommasandra corridor. Differences in train configurations and other operational aspects have also emerged as issues.

As an alternative, Bengaluru Metro has suggested extending the respective metro systems up to the state border and connecting the stations at Attibele through a pedestrian facility.

Meanwhile, the feasibility study for the Bommasandra-Attibele extension has already been submitted to the Karnataka government, which has given approval to proceed with preparation of the Detailed Project Report.

Once the DPR is prepared and the project receives the necessary approvals, the extension could strengthen connectivity across southern Bengaluru and provide easier access to key residential and industrial areas along the Hosur Road corridor.

The proposed nine-station extension also keeps open the possibility of stronger public transport connectivity between Bengaluru and the Tamil Nadu border, even as discussions over a full interstate metro link continue.
