Chennai’s industrial belt is set to get another major manufacturing investment, with YKK India planning to establish a new production facility in Thiruvallur with an investment of ₹1,651 crore.

The Indian subsidiary of Japan-based YKK Corporation signed a memorandum of understanding at the Vetri Tamil Nadu Investors Conclave 2026 for the proposed project. The investment is expected to create around 4,300 employment opportunities, adding further momentum to manufacturing activity in the Chennai region.

The new facility will come up at Origins by Mahindra, an industrial cluster developed within Mahindra Industrial Park Chennai Ltd. The project will become YKK India’s third manufacturing facility in the country and is expected to strengthen its production capacity for both domestic and international markets.

YKK is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of fastening products, with its portfolio including zippers, buttons, fastening systems and related components used across apparel, textiles, industrial products and consumer goods.

According to details shared by Mahindra Industrial Park Chennai Ltd, the proposed facility will cover approximately 149,936 square metres. Construction is targeted for completion by February 2028.

The investment also highlights the continuing attraction of the Chennai-Thiruvallur industrial corridor for global manufacturers. The region has developed a strong ecosystem supported by industrial parks, logistics infrastructure, skilled manpower and access to Chennai’s major transport networks.

Origins by Mahindra is part of Mahindra Industrial Park Chennai Ltd, a joint venture between Mahindra World City Developers Ltd and Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation. Its location provides connectivity to Chennai Port and Chennai International Airport, while also offering access to the wider manufacturing ecosystem around the city.

For YKK India, the new facility is expected to improve production efficiency and supply-chain capabilities while providing additional capacity to serve customers in India and overseas.

The project is also likely to generate opportunities for ancillary businesses and service providers in and around Thiruvallur as construction and subsequent manufacturing operations scale up.

The latest investment adds to a broader trend of multinational companies expanding manufacturing operations in Tamil Nadu. Automotive, electronics, engineering, textiles and industrial manufacturing companies have increasingly been choosing the state as a base for serving both the Indian market and export destinations.

With the proposed YKK facility, Thiruvallur is set to further strengthen its position within Tamil Nadu’s expanding industrial landscape, while the investment is expected to create thousands of new employment opportunities in the region.
