Indian Railways has registered a sharp rise in cement transportation over the last four months, recording nearly 170 percent growth after implementing a series of logistics and freight handling reforms aimed at improving bulk cargo movement across the country.
According to official reports, the increase has been supported by the introduction of specialised bulk cement storage tank containers, streamlined freight policies and faster cargo handling systems designed to improve operational efficiency for cement manufacturers and logistics operators.
The development comes at a time when India’s infrastructure and construction sectors continue to witness strong demand from highways, housing, industrial corridors and urban development projects. With cement consumption increasing steadily across the country, Railways has been focusing on expanding its role in bulk commodity transportation while reducing dependency on road logistics.
Industry observers believe the reforms are helping cement companies move larger volumes more efficiently through dedicated rail freight solutions. Lower turnaround time, improved container utilisation and reduced logistics costs are also expected to support long distance cement transportation in the coming quarters.
Following the success in cement cargo movement, Indian Railways is now looking to expand its presence in the fly ash transportation market. Fly ash, a byproduct generated by thermal power plants, is widely used in cement manufacturing, ready mix concrete and infrastructure construction activities.
Officials indicated that the existing bulk handling infrastructure could also be adapted for fly ash movement, creating an additional freight opportunity for Railways while supporting sustainable material utilisation in the construction sector.
The push towards bulk cargo transportation aligns with the government’s broader logistics modernisation plans aimed at reducing transportation costs, improving supply chain efficiency and strengthening multimodal freight connectivity across India.
With increasing infrastructure investments and rising industrial activity, Railways is expected to play a larger role in transporting construction-related commodities including cement, clinker, fly ash and steel products in the coming years.
