A major industrial tragedy unfolded at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant after a massive explosion involving a ladle carrying molten steel claimed the lives of eight workers and left several others critically injured. The incident, which occurred inside the steel melting facility, is being described as one of the deadliest accidents witnessed at the plant in more than a decade.
According to preliminary reports, the explosion took place in the continuous casting section of the steel melting shop when a ladle carrying nearly 150 tonnes of molten steel at temperatures approaching 1,600 degrees Celsius suddenly exploded and toppled. The blast unleashed a stream of molten metal across the shop floor, triggering an intense fire and trapping workers in the vicinity.
Authorities said around 18 workers were present in the area at the time of the accident. While several managed to escape, eight workers lost their lives after being engulfed by the extreme heat and flames. Several others sustained severe burn injuries and are undergoing treatment at hospitals in Visakhapatnam.
Rescue teams and fire personnel worked for nearly 90 minutes to bring the blaze under control and recover victims from the affected area. The intensity of the fire highlighted the severe risks associated with molten metal handling operations in steel manufacturing facilities.
The accident has reignited concerns over industrial safety standards at the plant. Trade unions and workers have alleged that ageing equipment, maintenance issues and manpower shortages have contributed to repeated safety incidents in recent years. Similar molten steel-related accidents were reported in 2020, 2023 and 2025, prompting demands for stronger safety measures.
Industrial safety experts indicate that ladle explosions can result from equipment failure, leakage, refractory lining damage, moisture-related steam reactions or crane malfunctions. A detailed investigation is expected to determine the exact cause of the latest disaster.
The tragedy has once again highlighted the critical importance of rigorous safety protocols, preventive maintenance and modernisation efforts in India’s steel manufacturing sector to prevent similar incidents in the future.
