JSW Steel has started the new financial year on a strong note, reporting a healthy increase in crude steel production during May 2026. The company produced 22.93 lakh tonnes of crude steel during the month, registering a 15% growth compared to 19.96 lakh tonnes produced in the corresponding period last year.
The improvement was largely driven by higher output from the company’s Dolvi facility in Maharashtra and the continued ramp-up of operations at JSW Vijayanagar Metallics Ltd (JVML), its wholly owned subsidiary. The comparison is particularly significant as the Dolvi plant had undergone a planned maintenance shutdown during May 2025, impacting production levels in the year-ago period.
JSW Steel’s Indian operations contributed the bulk of the output, producing 21.98 lakh tonnes during the month, also reflecting a 15% increase over the previous year. The company said operational performance across its facilities remained strong despite ongoing capacity enhancement activities at its flagship Vijayanagar complex.
Blast Furnace-3 at the Vijayanagar plant is currently undergoing a planned shutdown as part of a capacity expansion programme. The upgraded facility is expected to resume operations by mid-June 2026. Excluding the furnace under maintenance, capacity utilisation across Indian operations stood at an impressive 98%. Including the shutdown unit, overall utilisation was reported at 87%.
The company also recorded growth in its overseas operations. JSW Steel USA-Ohio produced 0.95 lakh tonnes during May, compared to 0.79 lakh tonnes in the same period last year, representing a 20% increase.
The production growth comes at a time when steel demand in India continues to be supported by infrastructure spending, construction activity and manufacturing expansion. Industry analysts expect domestic steel consumption to remain strong as government-backed infrastructure projects and private sector investments gather momentum.
Earlier this year, JSW Steel completed the transfer of the steel business of Bhushan Power and Steel Ltd to JSW-JFE Steel Ltd as part of its ongoing business restructuring efforts. The company has adjusted production comparisons accordingly to maintain consistency in year-on-year reporting.
