IIT Madras Opens ₹3.30 Crore Robotics Lab for Construction Technology Research

Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has inaugurated a ₹3.30 crore robotics laboratory aimed at advancing automation and robotics applications in the construction and infrastructure sectors.

The laboratory, inaugurated on September 22, 2026, has been established with corporate social responsibility (CSR) support from Bechtel India Private Limited. The initiative brings together academic research and industry expertise to develop technologies that can address practical challenges faced by the construction industry.

The new facility will focus on construction robotics, automation and advanced construction technologies. Research activities are expected to include the development of prototypes, testing of technologies, joint research projects and demonstrations of solutions for real-world construction applications.

The partnership also creates a platform for IIT Madras faculty, students and industry engineers to work together on construction-related technology challenges. Bechtel India is expected to contribute industry perspectives to curriculum development and facilitate mentorship by professionals from the company.

Prof. Ashwin Mahalingam, Dean of Alumni and Corporate Relations at IIT Madras, said industry-academia partnerships can help address industry-relevant challenges while taking promising technologies closer to deployment.

The laboratory will be led by IIT Madras faculty members Prof. T. Asokan and Prof. Koshy Varghese. The collaboration was formalised through a memorandum of understanding involving IIT Madras faculty and representatives of Bechtel India.

For Bechtel India, the partnership provides an opportunity to work with students, faculty and engineers on automation solutions for construction. The company will also explore internship opportunities at its offices for selected candidates.

The collaboration is expected to support research publications, patents, prototypes and industry demonstrations. It will also give students exposure to emerging technologies and their practical applications, particularly in advanced engineering and deep-tech fields.

The initiative is planned as a long-term collaboration, with potential industry-relevant projects and applications over the next five to ten years. It is also intended to contribute to the development of skilled professionals in construction robotics and related technologies.

As construction projects become increasingly dependent on productivity, precision and technology-driven processes, the IIT Madras-Bechtel partnership is positioned around developing practical automation solutions for the sector. The new robotics laboratory will provide a dedicated environment for research, testing and collaboration between academia and industry.
