IHCL to Develop 300-Key Taj Hotel in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu

Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) has signed an agreement to develop a new 300-key Taj hotel in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, expanding the company’s presence in one of the state’s prominent spiritual destinations.

The project, to be developed in partnership with Setupuram Hotels & Resorts Private Limited, will come up as a greenfield development spread across 70 acres. The hotel will be developed in phases, according to the company.

The upcoming Taj Rameswaram is planned as a full-service hotel aimed at serving a mix of religious, spiritual, leisure and business travellers. Rameswaram attracts visitors from across India and overseas, and the proposed development is expected to add organised hospitality capacity to the destination.

The property will feature two speciality restaurants, a bar lounge and a pool bar. It will also include facilities for meetings and social events, along with banquet spaces, convention areas and meeting rooms.

Leisure and wellness facilities are also planned as part of the project. These will include a swimming pool, fitness centre and a wellness venue with a spa featuring multiple treatment rooms.

Suma Venkatesh, Executive Vice-President, Real Estate and Development at IHCL, said Rameswaram has potential across religious, spiritual, leisure and MICE tourism as infrastructure and connectivity improve. She said the partnership with Setupuram Hotels & Resorts would bring the Taj brand to the destination.

Setupuram Hotels & Resorts Director Rajesh Jograj Bafna said the partnership represents an important milestone for the company and would contribute to the region’s tourism potential.

The project will further increase IHCL’s footprint in Tamil Nadu. Following the addition of the Rameswaram property, the company’s portfolio in the state will comprise 35 properties, including 16 that are under development.

The proposed hotel comes as Rameswaram continues to serve as an important pilgrimage destination in Tamil Nadu. With a combination of accommodation, dining, meeting and wellness facilities, the Taj project is planned to cater to different categories of visitors travelling to the region.

The development will be executed in phases across the 70-acre site, with the final project timeline and operational details yet to be announced.
