Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) is planning to invest around ₹2,449 crore in a new natural gas pipeline connecting Kochi in Kerala with Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu, adding a major piece of energy infrastructure to southern India.

The proposed Kochi–Thoothukudi natural gas pipeline will stretch approximately 424.65 kilometres. The project is designed to transport up to 6.84 million metric standard cubic metres of natural gas per day, or MMSCMD, once operational.

The pipeline is expected to strengthen the movement of natural gas between the two states and improve access for industrial and other consumers along the corridor. Kochi and Thoothukudi are important industrial and consumption centres in southern India, making the proposed connection significant for the region’s energy network.

Pipeline to strengthen southern gas connectivity

The project comes at a time when natural gas infrastructure is expanding across India. Pipeline connectivity is important for industries looking to secure reliable gas supplies for manufacturing and other operations.

The Kochi–Thoothukudi corridor could provide a direct infrastructure link between Kerala and Tamil Nadu, while also supporting the wider development of the national gas grid. Once completed, the pipeline could improve connectivity between gas sources, terminals and consumption centres.

The pipeline’s proposed capacity of 6.84 MMSCMD will allow natural gas to be transported to customers connected to the network. Potential users could include fertiliser units, refineries, petrochemical facilities, manufacturing industries and city gas distribution networks, depending on the final network configuration and customer connections.

Investment could support industrial activity

The ₹2,449 crore investment is also expected to create opportunities for companies involved in engineering, procurement and construction. Suppliers of pipes, valves, compressors and other pipeline equipment could benefit as the project moves through its development and construction stages.

For IOCL, the project adds to its presence in the natural gas infrastructure segment alongside its established refining and fuel marketing businesses. The investment reflects the company’s broader participation in energy infrastructure beyond conventional petroleum products.

Kochi–Thoothukudi link

The proposed pipeline will connect Kochi in Kerala with Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu across a distance of about 424.65 kilometres. Its planned capacity of 6.84 MMSCMD is aimed at strengthening the availability and transportation of natural gas in southern India.

As India continues to develop its natural gas network, projects such as the Kochi–Thoothukudi pipeline could play a role in improving regional connectivity and supporting industries that use natural gas as an energy source.
