GMR Airports is stepping up its expansion plans across some of its key airport assets, with Delhi, Hyderabad and Nagpur emerging as major focus areas as passenger traffic and cargo demand continue to grow.
The group is reportedly planning investments of around ₹19,400 crore for the expansion and upgrading of Delhi and Hyderabad airports over the coming years. The proposed spending is aimed at adding capacity and strengthening both airports as major international aviation hubs.
At Delhi International Airport, GMR is looking to further enhance capacity as international passenger traffic increases. The airport currently has the capacity to handle around 100 million passengers annually, supported by a large domestic and international network. Additional capacity will help the airport cater to long-term growth in passenger volumes.
Hyderabad Airport is also expected to see further terminal expansion. The planned additions are part of a longer-term capacity strategy as passenger demand continues to rise.
Nagpur is emerging as another important component of GMR’s airport expansion strategy. The company has unveiled a multi-phase development programme for the airport, beginning with an initial investment of around ₹300 crore.
The expansion is expected to significantly increase Nagpur Airport’s passenger-handling capacity. From its current capacity of around 3 million passengers annually, the airport is planned to scale up to 30 million passengers a year, with the potential to eventually reach 50 million.
GMR also plans to develop Nagpur as a major cargo hub. The airport is expected to have long-term cargo-handling capacity of around 150,000 tonnes annually, strengthening its role in central India’s logistics and aviation network.
The investments underline GMR Airports’ broader strategy of building integrated airport ecosystems rather than focusing only on passenger terminals. Expansion of passenger capacity, international connectivity and cargo infrastructure is expected to play an increasingly important role as India’s aviation market grows.
For GMR, the projects also create opportunities to strengthen the commercial potential of its airport portfolio. Delhi and Hyderabad already serve as major aviation gateways, while the planned expansion at Nagpur could position the airport as a larger passenger and cargo centre.
The scale and timing of these projects will ultimately depend on passenger growth, project execution and the development of supporting airport infrastructure. With substantial capacity additions planned across three locations, GMR’s investment programme could significantly reshape its airport footprint over the coming years.
