Bengaluru’s Varthur Elevated Corridor Gets December 2026 Completion Deadline

The long-delayed Varthur elevated corridor in Bengaluru has received another completion deadline, with the Karnataka Road Development Corporation Limited (KRDCL) targeting December 2026 for the ₹488-crore project.

The elevated corridor is being developed along State Highway-35, a key road connecting several rapidly growing parts of Bengaluru’s eastern and southeastern suburbs. The corridor links Whitefield, Varthur, Gunjur and Sarjapur with the Outer Ring Road (ORR), areas that have witnessed rapid residential and commercial development over the past decade.

Construction of the 100-foot-wide elevated corridor began in May 2019. The project was originally scheduled to be completed by November 2021, but progress was affected by multiple challenges, including land acquisition, shifting of utilities, statutory approvals and execution-related issues.

KRDCL Managing Director Susheelamma N and project officials have now directed the contractor to accelerate the remaining works and meet the latest year-end deadline.

Some progress has already been made on the ground. Side-drain works have been completed, while more than 50 properties between Varthur Kodi and Varthur police station have been demolished to facilitate the project. However, 14 properties are still pending for acquisition.

The remaining land parcels have become a key issue, with negotiations involving transferable development rights as well as cash compensation.

Once completed, the elevated corridor is expected to improve traffic movement along one of Bengaluru’s increasingly congested stretches. The surrounding areas have experienced significant growth in housing, offices, schools and other commercial developments, placing considerable pressure on the existing road network.

The project is also expected to provide smoother connectivity between Whitefield and Sarjapur and improve access to the wider Outer Ring Road network.

For commuters, the importance of the project goes beyond the elevated structure itself. The Varthur-Sarjapur belt has become an important residential and employment corridor, but traffic congestion has remained a persistent challenge as development has outpaced road infrastructure.

Whether the December 2026 deadline is achieved will now depend largely on how quickly the remaining land acquisition and construction issues are resolved. After several years of delays, the latest target puts renewed focus on execution and timely completion of the Varthur corridor.
