Hyderabad-Vijayawada Highway Expansion: NHAI Invites ₹6,792 Crore Six-Laning Tender

The Hyderabad-Vijayawada highway expansion is moving ahead with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) inviting tenders for widening a major section of NH-65, a key road corridor connecting Telangana with Andhra Pradesh.

The main project covers the 181.3-km stretch between Malkapur near Hyderabad and Nandigama. NHAI plans to widen the existing four-lane highway to six lanes, with civil works estimated at ₹6,792.52 crore. The project also includes service roads along the corridor.

The upgraded section passes through several important towns, including Choutuppal, Chityala, Narketpally, Nakrekal, Suryapet, Kodad, Nawabpet and Nandigama. The widening is expected to increase road capacity and improve movement along the Hyderabad-Vijayawada route.

As part of the highway infrastructure package, 60 vehicular underpasses and 10 animal underpasses are planned. These facilities are intended to improve local connectivity while providing designated crossing points for vehicles, pedestrians and animals along the upgraded corridor.

The Hyderabad-Nandigama package will be implemented under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, according to the project details.

The expansion plans also extend towards the Andhra Pradesh coast. A 45.6-km stretch from the outskirts of Vijayawada towards Machilipatnam has been proposed for six-laning under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM). The broader Vijayawada-Machilipatnam section covers approximately 59 km.

The NH-65 corridor is an important road link between Hyderabad and major destinations in Andhra Pradesh. Increasing highway capacity on the route is expected to support smoother movement between the two states and improve access to towns located along the corridor.

For commuters and freight operators, the proposed six-laning could provide additional road capacity on a route that serves both regional and inter-city traffic. The planned service roads and underpasses are also intended to improve access and crossings at locations along the highway.

With tenders now invited for the Hyderabad-Nandigama section, the project has moved into the next stage of implementation. The proposed expansion, along with the planned Vijayawada-Machilipatnam six-laning, represents a broader effort to strengthen road connectivity across the Hyderabad-Andhra Pradesh corridor.
