Andhra Pradesh Approves ₹8,000 Crore Goa Shipyard Warship Facility at Machilipatnam

Andhra Pradesh has approved a major defence manufacturing project at Machilipatnam, with Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) planning to invest ₹8,000 crore in a new warship-building facility.

The project was cleared by the Andhra Pradesh State Investment Promotion Committee (SIPC) at its meeting on September 7, 2026. It is expected to add a significant new manufacturing base to the state’s growing industrial and defence ecosystem.

The proposed facility will be developed on 400 acres of land, which will be allotted to GSL in two phases. Preparatory work is scheduled to begin next month, setting the stage for the development of the large-scale shipbuilding project.

For Goa Shipyard, the Machilipatnam facility represents an important geographical expansion. It will be the company’s first manufacturing expansion outside its home base in Goa, giving GSL a presence on Andhra Pradesh’s coast and expanding its operational footprint.

The investment also comes as India continues to strengthen domestic defence manufacturing capabilities. A large shipbuilding facility in Machilipatnam could support the state’s ambitions to attract more defence-related industrial activity and develop a stronger manufacturing ecosystem around the project.

The ₹8,000 crore investment makes the facility one of the major industrial projects approved in the state in recent months. The phased land allocation is expected to enable GSL to move ahead with preparatory activities before construction and other project development work progresses.

For Andhra Pradesh, the project could further strengthen Machilipatnam’s role as an emerging industrial location while adding to the state’s broader efforts to build its defence manufacturing base.

With preparatory work expected to begin next month, the Machilipatnam project is set to become a key addition to Goa Shipyard’s operations and Andhra Pradesh’s defence-industrial landscape.
