The Government of India’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Specialty Steel is beginning to show measurable results, with cumulative investments reaching ₹23,896 crore and employment generation touching 14,138 as of March 31, 2026. The latest figures were shared by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in a written reply in the Lok Sabha, highlighting the scheme’s contribution to strengthening India’s steel manufacturing ecosystem.
The Specialty Steel PLI Scheme is one of the 14 sector-specific incentive programmes introduced by the Central Government to encourage domestic manufacturing, attract private investment, enhance exports and reduce dependence on imports. The initiative is being implemented by the Ministry of Steel, while the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade coordinates the overall monitoring of all PLI schemes.
The investment made under the specialty steel programme reflects the industry’s growing confidence in India’s manufacturing potential. The scheme has encouraged companies to expand production capacity, introduce advanced manufacturing technologies and produce value-added steel grades that were previously dependent on imports.
India has been focusing on increasing domestic production of specialty steel as demand continues to rise from sectors such as infrastructure, automobiles, engineering, defence, railways, renewable energy and capital goods. Higher local production is expected to improve supply chain resilience while supporting the country’s long-term industrial growth strategy.
The government has also been reviewing the implementation of the PLI schemes on a regular basis to improve effectiveness. Based on industry feedback, several operational changes and policy refinements have been introduced to simplify implementation and accelerate investments. Officials believe these measures will help manufacturers achieve higher production levels while creating additional employment opportunities across the steel value chain.
The latest performance of the Specialty Steel PLI Scheme also aligns with India’s broader objective of becoming a global manufacturing hub. With continued investments, technology upgrades and policy support, the domestic steel industry is expected to play a larger role in meeting both local demand and export opportunities in the coming years.
