Jindal Steel has announced a major milestone at its Angul steel plant with the commissioning of a 250 Metric Tonne Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF). The new facility adds 3 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) of crude steelmaking capacity, taking the plant’s total output from 6 MTPA to 9 MTPA.

The BOF commissioning was accompanied by the launch of Blast Furnace 2, further strengthening the integrated production flow at Angul. Together, these developments mark a significant step in Jindal Steel’s expansion strategy, aimed at positioning Angul as one of the largest single-site steelmaking hubs in the world.

Chairman Naveen Jindal highlighted the importance of this commissioning, stating that “the first heat has been tapped, and Angul now gains real muscle in steelmaking. Every tonne produced here enhances India’s self-reliance in steel capacity.”

The company has set an ambitious target of raising the Angul plant’s capacity to 12 MTPA within the current financial year. This will be achieved through a combination of new production units, power plants, and logistics infrastructure.

To ensure long-term efficiency and competitiveness, Jindal Steel is also working on several support projects. These include developing a dedicated port at Paradeep, establishing a slurry pipeline, and creating a coal pipe conveyor to optimize raw material movement. In addition, new coke oven facilities and the Shreebhoomi Power Plant are expected to further strengthen the plant’s integrated operations.

The steel produced at Angul will play a crucial role in supporting India’s rapidly growing infrastructure, automobile, energy, oil and gas, and real estate sectors. By focusing on scale, efficiency, and self-reliance, Jindal Steel aims to establish Angul as the cornerstone of its global growth strategy.

With the commissioning of these large-scale facilities, industry experts believe that Jindal Steel is positioning itself to meet rising domestic demand while also strengthening India’s standing in the global steel market.
