TNHB has cleared nearly 3,800 unsold housing units for the Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation.

To manage the backlog of unsold flats, the Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) has finally decided to give the Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation (TNPHC) the much-utilized 3,882 housing units for accommodation by the police. They had remained empty due to default ever since their construction in various projects in Chennai and Coimbatore.

Sources in the know have revealed that these unsold units comprise 1,956 of the 2,730 housing units constructed at Ambattur and Ayapakkam in Chennai, for the economically underprivileged classes. These last projects were completed in 2020, but very few buyers came along. Concurrently, at Sholinganallur, 1,501 of the 2,500 units fated for low, middle, and high-income groups remain unsold.

In Coimbatore, 150 units in Ganapathy also remain vacant.Acknowledging the need for rent-free housing for police personnel, the TNHB has initiated discussions with the Finance and Police departments to allocate these unsold properties to TNPHC. G.S. Sameeran, Managing Director of TNHB, confirmed that nearly 1,800 units from Ambattur and Ayapakkam, 1,000 units from Sholinganallur, and 150 units from Ganapathy would be handed over to the corporation.

“The TNPHC requires close to 3,800 houses for police quarters, and these unsold units offer a practical solution,” Sameeran stated. Senior police officials have already conducted field inspections of the properties.The TNHB is currently working on finalizing the pricing structure for these units in consultation with the relevant departments.

Once agreed upon, this allocation is expected to provide much-needed housing for police personnel while simultaneously helping TNHB reduce its inventory backlog.This move underscores a broader strategy by the state housing board to effectively repurpose unsold properties, ensuring optimal use of resources and addressing key housing needs for public servants.
