UltraTech Cement Crosses 2 GW Green Energy Capacity, Meets 48% of Power Needs

UltraTech Cement has crossed a major milestone in its green energy transition, taking its captive green power capacity to 2,024 MW. The company is now meeting around 48% of its total electricity requirements through renewable energy and Waste Heat Recovery Systems (WHRS).

The latest expansion follows the commissioning of 116.55 MW of wind power capacity in Rajasthan and an additional 10 MW of WHRS capacity in Karnataka. These additions have helped UltraTech move beyond the 2 GW mark in captive green energy capacity.

Of the total 2,024 MW capacity, 1,580 MW comes from renewable energy sources, while 444 MW is generated through Waste Heat Recovery Systems. The latter allows the company to convert waste heat generated during cement manufacturing into electricity, improving energy efficiency while reducing dependence on conventional power sources.

UltraTech had a captive green power capacity of 1,806 MW as of March 31, 2026. At that stage, green energy accounted for about 41% of its electricity requirements. The latest additions have increased the share to 48%.

The company has set a longer-term target of raising green energy’s contribution to 85% of its overall power mix by 2030. The transition is also taking place across individual manufacturing locations. Nearly one-third of UltraTech’s 76 manufacturing units in India now use more than 50% green energy, while five units have crossed the 95% mark.

For a cement manufacturer, the shift has implications beyond emissions reduction. Electricity and fuel are significant components of cement production costs, making captive renewable power and waste heat recovery important tools for improving energy efficiency and managing exposure to volatile energy prices.

UltraTech’s latest milestone also comes as the company continues to expand its broader sustainability initiatives. In September 2026, it announced plans to deploy more than 600 heavy-duty electric trucks by December 2026 to support the electrification of its logistics operations.

The company is also targeting further growth in its green power mix as it expands its manufacturing footprint. The 2,024 MW milestone therefore represents not just an increase in renewable capacity, but a broader shift in how UltraTech is managing energy requirements across its cement operations.
