Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has announced plans to operationalize 175 km of metro lines in Bengaluru by 2026, including the addition of 30 km of new lines by 2025. This ambitious expansion follows the successful inspection of the Nagasandra to Madavara stretch on the Namma Metro Green Line.
The new metro lines, set to improve connectivity, are part of the city’s third-phase development, which has already received central approval. Shivakumar recently tested a section of the extended Green Line, which departs from Yeshwanthpur Metro Station. The metro network, which has already seen the completion of its first two phases, now prepares for its third phase.
As part of ongoing improvements, the Karnataka government is working closely with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to construct an underpass at Madavara station. Additionally, a collaboration with Indian Railways will result in a pedestrian passageway at Yeshwanthpur railway station. Another underpass at Chikkabidarakallu is also in the works, with the project report already prepared in partnership with NHAI.
Bengaluru, which holds the highest metro ridership in the country, is set to see its Green Line expand to 33.46 km and the Purple Line to 40.5 km. The metro’s rapid expansion will improve connectivity and ease traffic congestion in the growing metropolis, benefiting daily commuters and enhancing urban mobility.
