A tragic landslide at the Wayanad Twin Tunnel Project construction site in Kerala has claimed two lives and left seven workers missing, raising fresh concerns over construction safety and disaster management in infrastructure projects across the country.
The incident occurred near Meenakshi Bridge at Kalladi in Meppadi panchayat after continuous heavy rainfall triggered a massive landslip. According to initial reports, soil excavated during tunnel construction had been piled up near the site. Floodwaters reportedly washed the loose earth downhill, resulting in the collapse.
Local residents were the first to respond and rescued seven injured construction workers from the debris before emergency teams reached the location. The rescued workers were admitted to nearby hospitals, where officials confirmed that their condition remains stable.
Search and rescue operations are continuing with personnel from the Fire and Rescue Services, local volunteers, and two teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) comprising around 60 members from Wayanad and Kozhikode. The District Collector is personally monitoring the rescue efforts.
The twin tunnel project is being executed by Konkan Railway Corporation Limited, with Dilip Buildcon handling the construction work. The ambitious 8.75-km project is designed to connect Anakkampoyil in Kozhikode district with Meppadi in Wayanad, reducing the travel distance from 42 km to less than 20 km and cutting travel time by up to one hour.
Kerala government officials stated that earlier warnings had been issued regarding the accumulation of excavated soil at the site. Authorities have indicated that the contractor had been instructed to remove the dumped earth before the onset of heavy rains, but the directions were allegedly not implemented. The incident has prompted renewed scrutiny of safety practices at major infrastructure projects.
The state government had allocated ₹2,134.5 crore for the Wayanad Twin Tunnel Project, which is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Kozhikode and Wayanad once completed. However, the latest tragedy has shifted attention toward worker safety, risk assessment, and stricter compliance with construction and environmental regulations.
As rescue operations continue, authorities are expected to investigate the exact cause of the landslide and determine whether lapses in safety protocols contributed to the disaster.
