A major shipbuilding development is taking shape near Thoothukudi, with the VO Chidambaranar Port Authority initiating the consultancy process for a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a proposed 2,500-acre greenfield shipbuilding cluster.

The project is being positioned as a long-term industrial development aimed at strengthening India’s shipbuilding capabilities and supporting the country’s maritime ambitions through 2047.

The DPR will be an important first step in determining how the proposed cluster can be developed and operated. The consultancy is expected to examine the feasibility of the site, assess market demand and evaluate the infrastructure requirements needed to support shipbuilding activities.

The proposed study will also look at the broader requirements of a shipyard-led industrial ecosystem. This includes planning for shipyard infrastructure, funding arrangements and an implementation framework for the project.
