Tamil Nadu has secured investment commitments worth ₹12,300 crore during Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s official visit to the United Kingdom, with projects spanning advanced manufacturing, electrical equipment and Global Capability Centres (GCCs).

The largest commitment comes from Samvardhana Motherson International, which, along with its European and UK joint venture partners, has signed an agreement to invest ₹11,000 crore in the State. The project is expected to create nearly 7,000 jobs and cover design, engineering, manufacturing, assembly and logistics facilities.

The investment is expected to strengthen Tamil Nadu’s position as a destination for advanced manufacturing and engineering activities, particularly those linked to the automotive sector.

GCC Investment Adds to Chennai’s Services Economy

Another significant agreement involves Ernst & Young (EY), which will establish and operate a GCC on behalf of a UK-headquartered global telecommunications company. The centre involves an investment of around ₹1,000 crore and is expected to generate more than 2,000 high-value jobs.

The proposed GCC will come up along Mount-Poonamallee Road in Chennai, one of three corridors identified under Tamil Nadu’s Global Capability Centres Corridor and Development Programme. The other corridors are Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam Radial Road and Rajiv Gandhi Salai (OMR).

The State government sees these corridors as a way to build the infrastructure and business ecosystem required by multinational companies looking to establish or expand their operations in Tamil Nadu.

More Investments Across Tamil Nadu

Sweden-based Sigma Technology Group is also expanding its existing GCC operations in Chennai and Tiruchy through its Indian arm, Zriya Solutions. The expansion is expected to create around 600 jobs in areas including embedded systems, industrial automation and industrial digitalisation.

Meanwhile, UK-based Wilson Power Solutions has committed ₹300 crore for a project in Tiruvallur, which is expected to create around 400 jobs and add to Tamil Nadu’s electrical equipment manufacturing capacity.

A European automotive components manufacturer has separately submitted a Letter of Intent expressing its preference for Tamil Nadu for a proposed ₹3,000-crore investment in India. The State government has assured the company of support to facilitate the proposed project.

Taken together, the latest commitments add to Tamil Nadu’s efforts to attract capital across manufacturing and knowledge-intensive sectors. The investments also underline the State’s push to broaden its industrial base while strengthening Chennai’s position as a major GCC and technology services destination.
