JSW Port Logistics gets nod for first Inland Container Depot in Ballari

JSW Infrastructure’s wholly owned subsidiary, JSW Port Logistics, is set to expand its logistics footprint in northern Karnataka after receiving a Letter of Intent from the Ministry of Finance to establish the first Inland Container Depot (ICD) in Ballari.

The proposed facility will be developed at Kudathini, where JSW Port Logistics already owns an 86-acre brownfield rail siding. The company acquired the rail siding for ₹57 crore in September 2025. It now plans to develop the site into a multimodal logistics facility, with the overall investment estimated at around ₹380 crore.

The approval is significant because the ICD will enable the handling of international import and export cargo closer to the region’s industrial centres. The facility is also expected to strengthen the rail-linked movement of cargo and create greater integration between inland logistics infrastructure and JSW Infrastructure’s port network.

The Ministry of Finance has stipulated that the ICD should be operationalised within one year. This gives JSW Port Logistics a relatively tight execution window as it moves from the existing rail asset towards a fully functional container-handling facility.

Kudathini’s location also offers a strategic advantage. The site is close to JSW Steel’s Vijayanagar operations, providing potential logistics synergies for the movement of raw materials and finished products. Beyond group cargo, the facility could also target third-party industrial customers in the wider Ballari region.

The project comes as JSW Infrastructure seeks to increase the contribution of its logistics business. The company’s logistics segment recorded revenue of ₹237.2 crore in the first quarter of Financial Year 2026–27, compared with ₹138.1 crore in the corresponding quarter a year earlier.

For JSW Port Logistics, converting an existing rail siding into an ICD represents an expansion of an established asset rather than a completely new greenfield development. The move is also aligned with the broader shift towards multimodal logistics, where rail and road connectivity are increasingly being integrated to improve cargo movement and reduce logistics costs.

The Ballari ICD could therefore become an important link between northern Karnataka’s industrial clusters and gateway ports. Its success, however, will depend on timely commissioning, cargo volumes and the ability to attract customers beyond the company’s existing ecosystem.
