Land acquisition for Parandur Airport gathers pace; 1,000 acres acquired and ₹400 crore paid in compensation

The land acquisition process for Chennai’s much-anticipated second airport at Parandur in Kanchipuram district has gathered significant momentum in recent weeks. According to official sources, nearly 1,000 acres of land have already been acquired for the project, with compensation payments amounting to approximately ₹400 crore made to landowners.

The new airport project, proposed to decongest the existing Chennai International Airport, requires around 5,183 acres of land across 13 villages including Parandur, Nelvoy, Podavur, Aghanapuram, and Valathur. While the state government has emphasized that the project will bring major economic and infrastructure benefits to Tamil Nadu, local resistance continues from a section of villagers who fear displacement and loss of livelihood.

Despite the protests, several landowners have come forward to hand over their properties for the development of the airport. In July, 19 residents from five villages were among the first to voluntarily transfer their land to the government. As of September, 441 landowners from 12 villages had relinquished a total of 566 acres, demonstrating increasing public cooperation towards the project.

Officials from the Revenue Department confirmed that land acquisition activities are being carried out in a phased manner to ensure fair compensation and transparent communication with stakeholders. Authorities are also coordinating with various departments to expedite the remaining land acquisition process to meet project deadlines.

The Parandur airport is expected to transform Chennai into a major aviation hub in South India, attracting global investments and enhancing regional connectivity. Once operational, it will ease congestion at the existing Chennai airport and significantly boost economic activity in Kanchipuram and surrounding districts.

District authorities have assured that all efforts are being made to address public concerns while ensuring the smooth and timely implementation of the project.
