Jindal Steel and Danieli Achieve Record Performance at Angul Steel Plant

Jindal Steel has achieved a major operational milestone at its Angul steel plant in Odisha, with its Danieli-supplied twin slab casting facility surpassing key performance guarantees and setting new benchmarks for productivity and efficiency in steel manufacturing.

The achievement highlights the growing capabilities of India’s steel sector as producers continue to invest in advanced technologies to improve output quality, operational reliability, and production efficiency.

The two twin-strand slab casters installed at Steel Meltshop #2 in Angul were supplied by global technology provider Danieli. Designed with an annual production capacity of 7.2 million tonnes, the facility converts liquid steel into slabs of varying thicknesses and widths that serve as critical raw materials for downstream steel processing operations.

According to the company, the casting facility exceeded several guaranteed performance parameters during its optimization phase. The plant achieved a maximum casting speed of 2.75 metres per minute for low-carbon steel grades, 2.0 metres per minute for medium-carbon grades, and 1.45 metres per minute for peritectic steel grades.

One of the most notable achievements was the rapid production ramp-up. Within just 45 days of the hot test phase, the facility successfully cast 47 heats in a single tundish sequence over a continuous period of 33 hours. The plant also recorded a peak throughput of 10.5 tonnes per minute while producing low-carbon steel grades.

Operational efficiency improved further with re-stranding time being reduced to 64 minutes, outperforming the guaranteed benchmark of 68 minutes. This reduction has enabled longer production cycles and increased overall plant productivity.

The facility has also demonstrated the ability to consistently achieve up to 40 heats per day, contributing to higher production volumes while maintaining product quality standards.

Jindal Steel attributed the achievement to close collaboration between its operational teams and Danieli’s technology experts. Continuous optimization of process parameters, equipment reliability improvements, and defect reduction initiatives have helped deliver stable and repeatable performance across multiple steel grades.

The milestone reinforces Jindal Steel’s commitment to adopting advanced steelmaking technologies and strengthens the company’s position as one of India’s leading steel producers.
