Swedish home furnishings major IKEA has expanded its online delivery services across Tamil Nadu, bringing its wide range of home products to customers in Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and Salem. The move marks an important milestone in IKEA’s long term India growth strategy and strengthens its presence in southern markets without immediately adding new physical stores.
IKEA, which opened its first India store in 2018 in Hyderabad, said customers in Tamil Nadu can now access more than 6,400 products through its mobile app, website and assisted Shop by Phone service. All orders from the state will be fulfilled through the company’s Bengaluru distribution network, with delivery timelines ranging between three and seven days.
The company said Chennai has been on its strategic radar for nearly a decade, citing the city’s strong mix of tradition and modern living. While IKEA did not confirm timelines for opening a physical store in Chennai, executives said multiple formats including large stores, city stores and smaller planning points remain under evaluation.
Patrik Antoni, Chief Executive Officer of IKEA India, said the company sees India as one of its most promising global markets despite the country still accounting for a relatively small share of IKEA’s overall business. He added that India’s economic growth, young population and evolving consumption patterns offer strong long term opportunities for the brand.
Online sales currently contribute over 30 percent of IKEA’s total India revenue, significantly higher than the global average. The company aims to raise this share to around 40 percent, following a digital first approach before opening stores in new cities. This strategy allows IKEA to build market understanding and demand visibility before making large real estate investments.
IKEA’s India sales rose 6 percent to about Rs 1,861 crore in the year ended August 2025. The retailer plans to significantly scale this figure by expanding its store count to nearly 30 over time. In line with its sustainability goals, IKEA said all last mile deliveries in Tamil Nadu will be carried out using electric vehicles, reinforcing its focus on environmentally responsible growth in India.
