Efforts to build a new high-level bridge across the Kaveri River, connecting Trichy and Srirangam, have been accelerated as the Tamil Nadu highways department prepares for crucial stages of construction. The bridge aims to improve connectivity between Trichy mainland and the Srirangam highland, a key development for the region.

With Kaveri’s water flow expected to drop within the next two weeks, the department is prioritizing the fabrication of 96 prestressed girders required for the structure. So far, 30 girders have been fabricated at a temporary facility near Odathurai Road. The bridge, designed with 16 spans supported by 15 pillars, will begin its next construction phase once water levels recede significantly in February.

To ensure the project’s stability and safety, officials will soon conduct a critical load test on a test pile foundation drilled into the riverbed. This test will assess the strength of the sand and rock beneath the riverbed by applying loads exceeding those expected from vehicular traffic. “Construction work on the riverbed, including the pile foundation, will begin after February when water levels are low,” a senior official confirmed.

Currently, the river discharges between 3,500 and 4,100 cusecs of water from the Mukkombu regulator, prompting workers to prepare a platform for machinery and personnel to begin riverbed work promptly once conditions allow.

In parallel, the district revenue department is expediting land acquisition for the bridge’s approach road at the Melachinthamani end. A gazette notification has been issued detailing the properties required for acquisition. While some objections have been raised, officials are working to address them amicably. Compensation will be provided for acquired lands, with building owners receiving payments for structures affected.

This high-level bridge is set to become a vital infrastructure upgrade, strengthening regional connectivity and ensuring safe and efficient travel between Trichy and Srirangam.
