Chennai to Launch ₹530-Crore Intelligent Transport System in August to Transform Urban Mobility

Chennai is set to take a significant step towards smarter urban mobility with the launch of the ₹530-crore Intelligent Transport System (ITS) in August 2026. The project, being implemented by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) with financial assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), is expected to modernise traffic management, improve road safety and enhance public transport services across the Chennai Metropolitan Area.

According to GCC Commissioner G.S. Sameeran, the initiative is designed to create a safer, commuter-friendly city by integrating advanced traffic management technologies with public transport systems. The project combines intelligent traffic monitoring with digital public transport solutions, making it one of Chennai’s largest smart mobility initiatives.

A major component of the project is the Traffic Information and Management System (TIMS), which is being developed for the Greater Chennai Traffic Police. The system includes adaptive traffic signal control, traffic incident detection, speed violation monitoring, red-light violation detection and variable message signboards. These technologies will enable authorities to monitor traffic in real time, respond faster to incidents and improve traffic flow across busy junctions.

As part of the rollout, adaptive traffic signal systems have already been integrated at more than 100 key junctions, while traffic incident detection systems have been installed at several flyovers. Automated enforcement technologies, including red-light and speed violation detection systems, are also being deployed to strengthen road safety and improve compliance with traffic regulations.

The second component of the project focuses on improving Chennai’s public transport network through the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC). More than 3,500 buses will be equipped with Automatic Vehicle Location Systems, allowing commuters to access real-time bus tracking and accurate arrival information. Passenger Information Systems are also being installed at hundreds of bus stops and depots, while depot management systems will help improve operational efficiency.

A central Traffic Information and Management Centre is also being established to serve as the city’s integrated traffic control hub. Once operational, it will coordinate traffic monitoring, enforcement and emergency response from a single location.

With infrastructure works progressing steadily, the Intelligent Transport System is expected to significantly improve Chennai’s transport network by reducing congestion, enhancing commuter safety and supporting the city’s long-term smart mobility goals.
