Centre Sanctions 5 Lakh PMAY Houses for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana

The Central government has sanctioned a total of 5 lakh houses for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), with both states receiving additional housing allocations, Union Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development Dr Pemmasani Chandrasekhar said.

Andhra Pradesh has been allocated an additional 2.25 lakh houses, taking the total number of houses made available to the state since the coalition government assumed office to 3 lakh. Telangana has received an additional 1.21 lakh houses, taking its total allocation to 2 lakh.

The latest allocations are part of the Centre’s broader Housing for All approach, with the government focusing on identifying eligible beneficiaries and completing newly sanctioned houses over the next two to three years.

For Andhra Pradesh, the minister also highlighted the status of houses sanctioned during the 2019 to 2024 period. Of the 1.78 lakh houses approved during that period, only around 42,000 had been completed, accounting for nearly 23 per cent. The government is now taking steps to complete the remaining houses, which are at different stages of construction.

The beneficiary selection process is expected to use digital and geo-tagging mechanisms. According to Pemmasani, the Awaas Plus app, geo-tagging and self-survey systems are being used to improve transparency in identifying eligible households with land.

The Centre and state governments may also provide additional support through various housing-related schemes. The minister said the combined assistance available to beneficiaries could amount to around ₹1.7 lakh to ₹1.8 lakh per house.

Eligibility norms have also been eased, with the monthly income ceiling increased from ₹10,000 to ₹15,000. The changes are intended to widen access to housing assistance while maintaining a transparent beneficiary identification process.

The latest PMAY allocations are significant for both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana as the states work to address housing requirements across rural and eligible low-income households. The focus will now shift towards beneficiary identification, construction progress and timely completion of the newly sanctioned houses.
