Bengaluru Metro’s ambitious expansion programme has achieved a major milestone with the delivery of the first driverless train for the upcoming Blue Line corridor by Bengaluru Earth Movers Limited (BEML). The six-coach metro train has been transported from BEML’s manufacturing facility in CV Raman Nagar to the Byappanahalli depot, where initial testing activities will begin.
The Blue Line is one of the most important metro corridors under development in Bengaluru. Running along the busy Outer Ring Road corridor, the route is expected to serve thousands of daily commuters working in the city’s technology parks, business districts and commercial hubs. Once operational, the corridor is expected to significantly reduce travel time and improve connectivity across one of Bengaluru’s most congested stretches.
According to Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), the newly delivered train will undergo extensive depot-level testing before entering the next phase of commissioning. Officials have indicated that testing and validation activities will continue for at least five months to ensure safety, reliability and operational efficiency.
The train is equipped with advanced features including driverless operation capability, LCD-based route information displays and enhanced safety systems. The Blue Line will also adopt Communications-Based Train Control technology, enabling a high degree of automation and supporting future fully driverless operations under Grade of Automation 4 standards.
Construction work on the Blue Line corridor is progressing simultaneously. The 18-kilometre elevated section between Central Silk Board and KR Pura is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. Once operational, the corridor is expected to transform mobility along the Outer Ring Road and support Bengaluru’s growing public transport requirements.
BEML’s successful delivery of the first train highlights the company’s growing role in India’s urban transit sector. The milestone also reflects the rapid pace of metro infrastructure development across Bengaluru as the city continues investing in modern, sustainable and technology-driven transportation systems to meet future mobility demands.
