ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has introduced Zagnelis Protect, a patented zinc-aluminium-magnesium coated steel brand designed specifically for automotive applications. The launch marks a significant milestone for the Indian steel and automotive industries, as India becomes the first market outside Europe to manufacture this advanced steel grade domestically.

The product was unveiled in Chennai in the presence of leading automotive manufacturers and industry stakeholders. Zagnelis Protect was previously available only in Europe and has now been localized to support the growing demand for high-performance steel products in India’s rapidly expanding automotive sector.

According to AM/NS India, the launch addresses a critical gap in the domestic supply chain. Currently, nearly 8 to 10 percent of advanced automotive steel grades used in India are imported due to their complex coating and metallurgical requirements. With India producing more than 30 million vehicles annually and passenger vehicle sales touching approximately 4.7 million units during FY26, demand for premium steel solutions continues to rise.

Zagnelis Protect features a specialized zinc-aluminium-magnesium coating that offers superior corrosion resistance compared to conventional galvanized steel. The coating provides enhanced protection at cut edges and formed sections, areas that are generally more vulnerable to corrosion and wear. The product also delivers self-healing properties, improved formability, and reliable weldability, making it suitable for a wide range of automotive applications.

Initially, the steel will be used in motor cups, which are key components in electric motors used for windows, mirrors, wipers, and seats. AM/NS India also sees significant opportunities for the product in chassis components, door inner panels, bonnet structures, and tailgate assemblies.

The launch forms part of AM/NS India’s broader strategy to localize advanced steel technologies and reduce dependence on imports. It also complements the company’s ongoing ₹60,000 crore expansion programme at its Hazira facility in Gujarat, aimed at strengthening India’s next-generation steel manufacturing ecosystem.

Industry experts believe the introduction of Zagnelis Protect will enhance supply chain resilience, reduce lead times, and support the Make in India initiative by enabling domestic production of globally advanced automotive steel grades.
