AM/NS India Secures New BIS Licences for Advanced Steel Products

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has secured Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) licences under two newly introduced standards, strengthening its portfolio of specialised steel products for infrastructure, defence and industrial applications.

The company has become the first steel manufacturer in India to receive the All India First BIS Licence for IS 2062 (Part 2):2026. The new standard covers hot rolled quenched and tempered (Q&T) steel plates, sheets, strips and wide flats.

AM/NS India has also obtained a BIS licence under IS 19210:2025 for pre-painted Zinc-Aluminium-Magnesium (Zn-Al-Mg) alloy coated steel strip and sheet.

The certifications have commercial implications for the company as BIS certification is required for supplying steel to several state-funded infrastructure, defence and public sector projects. The new licences therefore enable AM/NS India to participate in procurement opportunities where these certified grades are specified.

The IS 2062 (Part 2):2026 standard is the first BIS standard specifically developed for quenched and tempered steel plates. These products undergo specialised heat treatment to achieve higher strength and durability. Their applications include bridges, heavy engineering equipment, mining machinery, offshore structures and marine projects.

The second licence covers pre-painted Zn-Al-Mg coated steel products. AM/NS India’s offering is based on Optigal, ArcelorMittal’s zinc-aluminium-magnesium coating technology. The coating is designed to provide higher corrosion resistance and improved protection at cut edges compared with conventional colour-coated steel.

These products have applications across roofing and cladding, pre-engineered buildings, warehouses, railways and industrial construction.

The newly certified products are manufactured at AM/NS India’s facilities in Hazira and Pune. The company said the licences would help expand the availability of specialised steel products made domestically, particularly in segments where customers have previously depended on imported materials.

The development also adds to AM/NS India’s existing BIS portfolio. The company currently holds 25 BIS licences, including three All India First Licences under IS 3039, IS 18809:2024 and IS 2062 (Part 2):2026.

AM/NS India has supplied steel for several major national projects, including the Chenab Rail Bridge and naval platforms such as INS Surat, INS Visakhapatnam and INS Malvan.

The latest certifications come as demand for higher-performance steel products grows across infrastructure, heavy engineering, industrial construction and other applications requiring improved strength, durability and corrosion resistance.
