Tamil Nadu Moves to Acquire Land Near Parandur for New Industrial Park

Tamil Nadu has begun the process of acquiring land near Parandur for an industrial development, just days after the State government formally dropped the proposed greenfield airport project in the region.

A Gazette notification dated September 1, 2026, issued by the Commissioner of Land Administration, proposes the acquisition of 8.382 hectares of land at Maduramangalam in Kancheepuram district for the Maduramangalam Industrial Park.

The acquisition is being carried out under the Tamil Nadu Acquisition of Land for Industrial Purposes Act, 1997, with the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) identified as the agency through which the land will be acquired.

Industrial development takes shape near abandoned airport site

Maduramangalam is located close to the area that had been identified for the now-abandoned Parandur greenfield airport. The proximity makes the latest land acquisition particularly significant, as the government considers alternative industrial uses for land in and around the region.

The State has separately announced plans for a ₹175-crore semiconductor and electronics manufacturing park at Madhuramangalum. The proposed development is expected to involve more than 400 acres of patta and government land.

Tamil Nadu Industries Minister S. Keerthana had earlier indicated that land acquired by the previous DMK-led government for the Parandur airport could potentially be put to use for other industrial projects.

Parandur airport project formally dropped

The latest industrial land acquisition comes shortly after Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced in the Assembly that the proposed Parandur greenfield airport project would be abandoned.

The decision followed prolonged opposition from farmers and residents concerned about the impact of the airport on agricultural land and the local environment.

Vijay said the government stood with farmers who had opposed the project and maintained that their agricultural land needed to be protected. At the same time, the government has reportedly been examining alternative locations for the airport, including Cheyyur and Manallur near Gummidipoondi.

The developments indicate that while the Parandur airport proposal has been shelved, the wider region could continue to see significant government-led infrastructure and industrial activity.
