Kochi Metro Phase 2: Traffic Management Takes Centre Stage as Construction Advances

Construction of Kochi Metro’s Phase 2 corridor is gathering pace, but managing traffic along some of the city’s busiest roads has emerged as an immediate priority.

The 11.2-km corridor will connect JLN Stadium with Kakkanad and Infopark through 11 stations, extending metro connectivity from central Ernakulam towards one of Kochi’s fastest-growing residential, commercial and technology districts.

During a recent inspection of construction locations between JLN Stadium and SmartCity, Kochi Metro Rail Ltd Managing Director G Priyanka directed officials to take steps to ease congestion at Palarivattom, Alinchuvadu and Vazhakkala. Authorities have also been asked to review temporary barricading and remove it wherever possible without compromising construction or road-user safety.

The traffic measures come as civil works expand along existing urban roads that already handle heavy commuter movement. Coordination with the regional transport office has been directed to help maintain smoother vehicle flow around construction zones.

Beyond traffic management, land acquisition and utility shifting remain important for keeping the project on schedule. Agencies including the Kerala State Electricity Board, Public Works Department and Kerala Water Authority have been asked to complete their respective works without delay. Particular attention is being given to proposed station structures at Palarivattom and Padamugal.

KMRL’s project updates indicate that several preparatory milestones have already been completed. Road widening and soil investigation are finished, while the project’s general consultant has been appointed. Detailed design consultants for stations and traction have also begun their work.

Construction contracts have been awarded for entry and exit structures at the proposed Kakkanad and SEZ stations, where piling is underway. Tendering has also started for similar structures at Chittethukara, KINFRA Park and Infopark.

The Union Cabinet approved the Phase 2 project in September 2022. The approved project cost stands at ₹1,957.05 crore, covering the core infrastructure as well as land, rehabilitation and resettlement, interest during construction and the public-private partnership component.

Once operational, the corridor is expected to provide a direct mass-transit link between central Ernakulam and Kakkanad’s expanding employment and residential clusters. The route will also support multimodal connectivity with bus services, Kochi Water Metro and public bicycle-sharing facilities at suitable locations.

For now, however, the focus remains firmly on keeping traffic moving while construction progresses. How effectively KMRL and other civic, utility and traffic agencies coordinate in the coming months will be critical as the project enters more intensive construction stages.
