Skyroot Aerospace, Agnikul Cosmos to Invest ₹650 Crore in Thoothukudi Space Facilities

Tamil Nadu is set to deepen its presence in India’s growing private space sector, with Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace and Chennai-based Agnikul Cosmos announcing a combined investment of ₹650 crore in Thoothukudi.

The two space technology companies are expected to create around 2,000 jobs through facilities focused on launch vehicle manufacturing, assembly, integration and testing.

Skyroot Aerospace will invest ₹250 crore to establish its first facility in Tamil Nadu. The company plans to develop storage, assembly, integration and testing infrastructure for its launch vehicles, creating around 500 employment opportunities.

The location in Thoothukudi is strategically important because of its proximity to the Indian Space Research Organisation’s second spaceport at Kulasekarapattinam. The spaceport is being developed to support satellite launches, particularly smaller launch vehicles, and is expected to become an important part of India’s expanding space infrastructure.

Agnikul Cosmos will invest another ₹400 crore and is expected to generate around 1,500 jobs. Its proposed operations will focus on assembly and integration of reusable, liquid-propelled launch vehicles.

Both companies were founded by former ISRO engineers and have emerged as prominent players in India’s private space industry. Their investments in Thoothukudi are expected to strengthen the state’s aerospace manufacturing ecosystem while creating opportunities for suppliers, engineering companies and skilled workers.

The investments were announced as part of the Vetri Tamil Nadu Investors Conclave 2026, where companies signed agreements covering multiple sectors. The broader investment commitments announced at the conclave were reported at ₹67,452 crore across 97 companies, with more than one lakh jobs expected to be created.

For Tamil Nadu, the entry of private space companies adds another dimension to its industrial base. The state already has established strengths in automotive, electronics, engineering and defence manufacturing. The proximity of the proposed facilities to the Kulasekarapattinam spaceport could help connect these capabilities with the emerging commercial space industry.

The two projects could also give Thoothukudi a larger role in the state’s aerospace and advanced manufacturing ambitions. As India’s private space ecosystem expands, local manufacturing, testing and supply-chain capabilities are expected to become increasingly important.
