Tamil Nadu Seeks Centre’s Approval for Three Chennai Metro Extensions in Budget 2026–27

The Tamil Nadu government has proposed three major Chennai Metro Rail extension projects in the State Budget 2026–27, seeking the Centre’s approval to expand the city’s mass transit network and improve connectivity to rapidly growing suburban and industrial corridors.

Presenting the Budget in the Legislative Assembly, Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson announced that the state has requested approval for three strategic Metro corridors. The proposed routes include Chennai Airport to Kilambakkam, Koyambedu to Pattabiram via Avadi, and Poonamallee to Sunguvarchathiram via Sriperumbudur.

The proposed projects are expected to strengthen Chennai’s public transport network by connecting major residential neighbourhoods, industrial clusters and transport hubs with the existing Metro system. Once approved, the new corridors are expected to reduce travel time, ease traffic congestion and improve access to fast-growing suburbs.

Among the proposed corridors, the Airport to Kilambakkam extension is expected to provide direct Metro connectivity to the Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus, one of Tamil Nadu’s largest intercity bus terminals. The project is expected to improve multimodal transport integration and make travel easier for passengers travelling between Chennai and southern districts.

The Koyambedu to Pattabiram corridor via Avadi is expected to improve connectivity across Chennai’s western suburbs. The route is likely to benefit thousands of daily commuters by linking residential areas with important employment centres, defence establishments, educational institutions and commercial hubs.

The third proposal extends the Metro from Poonamallee to Sunguvarchathiram through Sriperumbudur, one of Tamil Nadu’s largest industrial corridors. Home to automobile, electronics and engineering manufacturing facilities, Sriperumbudur is expected to benefit from improved workforce mobility and better public transport connectivity, supporting future industrial investments.

The latest Budget proposal also reflects a revised Metro expansion strategy. While earlier proposals had considered extending the corridor towards Parandur, the current proposal seeks approval only up to Sunguvarchathiram via Sriperumbudur.

In addition, the Budget announced that the state is pursuing a cross-border Metro rail project connecting Hosur in Krishnagiri district with Bommasandra in neighbouring Karnataka, highlighting Tamil Nadu’s broader vision of strengthening regional connectivity.

If approved by the Centre, the proposed Metro corridors will complement Chennai Metro’s ongoing Phase II expansion and support sustainable urban mobility, economic development and infrastructure growth across the Chennai Metropolitan Region.
