Vijayapura Airport in Karnataka is expected to become operational within the next three months, marking a significant milestone for the state’s aviation infrastructure. The announcement was made by Karnataka Industries and Infrastructure Development Minister M.B. Patil after the Supreme Court cleared a key environmental hurdle that had delayed the airport’s commissioning.
According to the minister, the airport infrastructure has already been completed, with only the remaining statutory approvals standing between the project and commercial operations. These include environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and a final inspection by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
The latest development follows a Supreme Court judgment that allows authorities to process pending environmental clearance applications for projects that had commenced without prior environmental approval. The verdict has brought clarity to several infrastructure projects across the country, including the Vijayapura Airport project.
The Karnataka government has already submitted its application for environmental clearance. Once the approval is issued, DGCA officials will inspect the airport facilities before granting the necessary operational permissions. Minister Patil expressed confidence that these procedures would be completed within the next three months, enabling the airport to begin commercial services.
Developed with an investment of more than ₹614 crore, Vijayapura Airport is expected to strengthen air connectivity in the Kittur Karnataka region and neighbouring districts. Improved connectivity is likely to reduce travel time for businesses, tourists and residents while supporting faster movement of goods and services.
The airport is also expected to attract fresh investments, encourage industrial development and create new employment opportunities across the region. Better air access could further strengthen sectors such as manufacturing, tourism, logistics and trade, making Vijayapura an increasingly attractive destination for businesses.
With the physical infrastructure already in place, the focus has now shifted to securing the remaining regulatory approvals. Once operational, Vijayapura Airport is expected to become an important addition to Karnataka’s growing aviation network, supporting regional development and improving connectivity across North Karnataka.
