Train passengers in Kerala could soon experience smoother and safer transfers between rail and Metro services as Indian Railways moves ahead with plans to construct elevated skywalks linking three major railway stations in Ernakulam with nearby Kochi Metro stations.

The proposed infrastructure will connect Tripunithura, Ernakulam Junction (South) and Ernakulam Town (North) railway stations directly to Kochi Metro stations. The initiative is expected to significantly improve multimodal connectivity by allowing passengers to move between train platforms and Metro services without navigating busy roads or traffic.

Railway officials have confirmed that the project has been shortlisted for approval by the Railway Board. A detailed project report is currently being prepared, which will outline the design, technical specifications and implementation strategy before the proposal moves to the next stage.

The demand for dedicated skywalk connectivity has been consistently raised by passenger associations and railway users. During a recent Divisional Railway Users’ Consultative Committee meeting, officials assured members that the proposed skywalks would form part of the ongoing redevelopment of railway stations in Ernakulam.

Apart from the elevated walkways, Indian Railways is also planning a covered pedestrian pathway connecting the ticket counter with the main entrance of Ernakulam Junction. The facility is expected to provide better protection for commuters during Kerala’s heavy monsoon rains and periods of intense summer heat.

Passenger representatives have also requested faster completion of platform extension works, installation of additional lifts and escalators, and improved accessibility for senior citizens, persons with disabilities and families travelling with luggage.

If approved, the skywalk project will become an important addition to Kerala’s urban transport infrastructure. By integrating Indian Railways with Kochi Metro, the project is expected to reduce transfer time, improve passenger convenience and encourage greater use of public transport. The initiative also reflects the growing emphasis on multimodal transport solutions that connect rail, Metro and other urban mobility systems to create more efficient and sustainable travel across rapidly expanding cities.
