The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is taking a major step toward modernising highway maintenance by shifting from conventional repair-based practices to an advanced predictive asset management framework. The initiative aims to identify road deterioration at an early stage, enabling timely interventions and improving the overall quality, safety and lifespan of the country’s national highway network.
The new strategy is built around three key pillars: asset condition monitoring, centralized asset intelligence and risk-based decision-making.
As part of the first pillar, NHAI has deployed Network Survey Vehicles across operational highways to collect detailed pavement condition data, including roughness, rutting, cracking and structural distress. The authority is also leveraging Drone Analytics Monitoring Systems to create digital asset inventories, monitor infrastructure conditions and detect encroachments. Additionally, Falling Weight Deflectometer testing is being used to assess pavement strength and identify vulnerable sections before visible failures occur.
NHAI has further strengthened its monitoring capabilities by introducing AI-powered Dashcam Analytics Services. These systems automatically detect potholes, damaged crash barriers, faulty lighting systems and drainage-related issues, helping maintenance teams address problems before they escalate.
The second pillar focuses on creating a centralized asset intelligence ecosystem. Data gathered from survey vehicles, drones, dashcams and inspections is integrated into a single digital platform, providing stakeholders with a comprehensive view of highway conditions. This unified system eliminates fragmented assessments and supports faster, data-driven decision-making.
The third pillar involves predictive monitoring and risk-based maintenance planning. By combining condition assessments, inspection records and real-time monitoring data, NHAI can identify deterioration trends, prioritize critical stretches and schedule maintenance activities proactively.
The adoption of artificial intelligence, data analytics and advanced monitoring technologies reflects NHAI’s broader commitment to enhancing infrastructure performance while optimizing maintenance expenditure. The initiative is expected to improve highway safety, reduce long-term repair costs and deliver a smoother travel experience for road users.
As India continues to expand its highway network, predictive maintenance is emerging as a critical tool for ensuring that infrastructure remains efficient, resilient and future-ready.
