Dubai-based global port operator DP World has acquired a 49 percent stake in the multimodal logistics park being developed by Reliance Industries at Mappedu near Chennai, marking a significant development in India’s logistics and infrastructure sector. The transaction highlights growing global interest in India’s integrated logistics ecosystem, especially in high-potential corridors around Chennai.

The project, being developed as a multimodal logistics park, is part of the government’s Bharatmala initiative aimed at improving freight efficiency and reducing logistics costs. Spread across 184 acres in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district, the facility is being implemented in phases with a total investment of around ₹1,427 crore. The first phase, estimated at ₹397 crore, is expected to become operational soon.

The logistics park is strategically located near the Chennai Peripheral Ring Road, offering seamless connectivity to major ports including Chennai, Ennore and Kattupalli, along with access to national highways and railway infrastructure. This positioning is expected to significantly enhance cargo movement efficiency and reduce turnaround times for logistics operators.

DP World’s entry into the project aligns with its strategy to expand its footprint in India’s logistics and supply chain sector. The partnership also strengthens Reliance’s position in the logistics space, with the company expected to be a key user of the facility through its retail and supply chain operations.

The park is designed to function as a comprehensive cargo handling and distribution hub, offering warehousing, container handling, cold storage and value-added logistics services. With strong connectivity and integrated infrastructure, the Chennai logistics park is poised to become a critical node in India’s freight network.

The deal also signals confidence in Tamil Nadu’s growing logistics and industrial landscape, reinforcing Chennai’s role as a major gateway for trade, manufacturing and distribution in South India.
