NH-44 Upgrade Set to Transform Bengaluru–Hyderabad Travel

The journey between Bengaluru and Hyderabad, two of South India’s most important economic and technology hubs, is poised for a major transformation. The Union government has approved the upgradation of National Highway 44 into a six-lane, access-controlled expressway, a move expected to significantly reduce travel time and improve overall road safety.

At present, the 576-kilometre NH-44 stretch passes through Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, connecting several key towns including Kurnool, Nandyal and Anantapur. Despite being one of the busiest interstate corridors in the region, the highway often witnesses congestion due to mixed traffic, multiple entry points and urban intersections. Once upgraded, the travel time between Bengaluru and Hyderabad is expected to come down to around five hours.

Unlike earlier proposals for a new greenfield corridor, the Centre has opted to modernise the existing highway. Officials noted that the proposed parallel corridor would have closely mirrored the current alignment while involving significantly higher land acquisition and construction costs. Expanding NH-44 was therefore seen as a more practical and cost-effective solution.

The upgraded expressway will feature controlled entry and exit points, allowing uninterrupted high-speed travel. Service roads will be developed on both sides to handle local and slow-moving traffic such as two-wheelers, tractors and autos, ensuring smoother flow on the main carriageway. Toll charges will be levied based on distance travelled, in line with national highway norms.

Beyond faster travel, the project is expected to deliver wider economic benefits. Improved road connectivity will support industrial movement, logistics efficiency and tourism across the three states. Businesses operating along the corridor are also likely to benefit from reduced transit times and lower fuel costs.

The NH-44 upgrade comes at a time when South India is witnessing rapid expansion of expressway infrastructure, including the nearing completion of the Bengaluru–Chennai Expressway. Together, these projects are expected to reshape regional mobility, strengthen intercity links and support long-term economic growth across the southern states.
