Kerala’s much awaited Anakkampoyil Kalladi Meppadi four lane tunnel road project is recording steady progress, marking a significant step forward in improving connectivity across the hilly regions of the state. The project aims to provide a reliable all weather alternative to the heavily burdened Thamarassery ghat road which has long struggled with traffic congestion, steep gradients and frequent disruptions during rains. Once complete the new corridor is expected to redefine the travel experience for residents and tourists who move between Wayanad and Kozhikode.

Estimated at nearly Rs 2,134 crore the tunnel covers a length of 8.73 kilometres and is one of the most ambitious infrastructure initiatives taken up in Kerala in recent years. The construction responsibility rests with Dilip Buildcon a leading national infrastructure company known for its large scale highway and tunnel projects. Along with the main tunnel a crucial bridge across the Iruvazhinji river is being developed by Punia Construction Company. The entire project is supervised by the Public Works Department and funded through the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board ensuring streamlined financial and technical oversight.

The new four lane tunnel will significantly reduce travel time by offering a safer and smoother passage through challenging terrain. For decades the Thamarassery route has acted as the primary link between the Malabar plains and the high ranges of Wayanad but its limitations have often resulted in slow moving traffic and long delays. The upcoming tunnel is seen as a transformative solution that will ease daily commuting strengthen regional logistics and support tourism in the hill district.

Officials indicate that the project is progressing on schedule and may be fully completed within the next four years if the current pace continues. When commissioned the Anakkampoyil Kalladi Meppadi tunnel road is expected to emerge as a landmark development for Kerala enhancing safety comfort and connectivity for lakhs of travellers every year.
