The Indian government is set to kickstart infrastructure development for 11 of the 12 approved industrial smart cities by December 2025, marking a significant milestone in the country’s industrial expansion. With a combined investment of Rs 28,602 crore, these projects are designed to be completed within three years, paving the way for modern, sector-specific industrial hubs.
The planned cities are strategically located along major industrial corridors, including Amritsar-Kolkata, Delhi-Mumbai, Vizag-Chennai, Hyderabad-Bengaluru, Hyderabad-Nagpur, and Chennai-Bengaluru corridors. Southern hubs such as Palakkad (Kerala), Kopparthy and Orvakal (Andhra Pradesh), and Bengaluru corridor regions are expected to play a key role in attracting large-scale investments and driving regional industrial growth.
Rajat Kumar Saini, Managing Director and CEO of the National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (NICDC), stated that contracts for four industrial parks have already been awarded, and Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractors appointed. Work on eight parks is scheduled to begin by November 30, with the remaining three starting by December 31. The government has ensured land acquisition, finalized sector-specific policies, and set up special purpose vehicles (SPVs) to fast-track development.
These industrial smart cities are expected to attract investments worth Rs 1.5 lakh crore, generating approximately 10 lakh direct and 30 lakh indirect jobs. Each city will feature dedicated zones for foreign investors and sector-specific industrial clusters, fostering innovation and international collaboration. For instance, Tumakuru in Karnataka has earmarked 300 acres exclusively for Japanese companies.
Once completed, these 11 new cities, along with the four existing operational industrial smart cities in Dholera, Shendra-Bidkin, Greater Noida, and Vikram Udyogpuri, as well as four currently under construction, will bring India’s total number of smart industrial cities to 20.
The initiative reflects the government’s commitment to accelerating industrial growth, enhancing regional development, and strengthening India’s position as a global manufacturing hub. With modern infrastructure, strategic locations, and investor-friendly policies, these cities are poised to transform the industrial landscape of the country.
