A round of funding for 34 bridges under construction in Tamil Nadu was sanctioned recently by the government for an expenditure of Rs 177 crores. This plan aims at the replacement of flood-damaged infrastructure set to receive a much-deserved push in connectivity, following requests received from the public under the Chief Minister’s “Ungal Thoguthiyil Muthalamaichar” program.

Salem district will see the highest number of new bridges, with six projects planned across P N Palayam, Attur, Gangavalli, and Ayothipattinam blocks. The flood-affected Krishnagiri district will also benefit from two new bridges in the Uthangarai and Veppanapalli blocks.

Three bridges each are set to undergo significant upgrades in Trichy, Vellore, and Villupuram, all confirmed on the list. Each district-Virudhunagar, Namakkal, and Tuticorin-will have two bridges. More districts including Coimbatore, Cuddalore, Dindigul, Dharmapuri, Erode, Madurai, The Nilgiris, Tiruppur, Thanjavur, and Tirunelveli will see one bridge with this approval.

The old item on 84 bridges was changed down to 34 bridges from original projections calling for a budget of Rs. 414 crores. Specifics of the provisions determined that from funding by the NABARD-Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF), state funding has since come in place.

A directive from the Tamil Nadu government to the chief engineer overseeing the project monitoring both construction and assuring the bridges comply with the quality stipulations.

The Rs 177 crore allocation will also fund the construction of 24 bridges based on petitions received through the Ungal Thoguthiyil Muthalamaichar initiative. Additionally, five bridges will replace those damaged by recent floods, while another five will improve local connectivity.

This move is expected to significantly enhance infrastructure in rural and flood-prone areas, ensuring better connectivity and safer roads for communities across Tamil Nadu.
