UltraTech Cement has entered the wires and cables business with the start of commercial production at its new manufacturing facility in Jhagadia, Bharuch, Gujarat. The move marks a significant expansion for the Aditya Birla Group company as it looks to build a broader presence across India’s construction and building materials value chain.

The Jhagadia plant has an initial installed capacity of 1,098,000 kilometres for house wires and light-duty cables. Commercial production began on September 1, 2026, adding a new electrical products vertical to UltraTech’s established cement business.

The company’s entry into the segment is backed by a ₹1,800-crore capital expenditure programme, which was approved by its board for deployment over two years. According to the company, ₹888 crore of the approved investment had already been spent or committed by July 2026, with trial runs progressing ahead of the commercial launch.

Expanding beyond cement

The wires and cables business is part of UltraTech’s wider strategy to strengthen its position as an integrated building solutions provider. The company already has an extensive distribution network through more than 3,500 UltraTech Building Solutions outlets.

This existing network could give UltraTech an advantage as it introduces electrical products to customers who already purchase construction materials through its channels. The company can potentially target individual home builders, contractors and institutional developers without having to build an entirely new distribution infrastructure.

The move also follows UltraTech’s broader diversification into adjacent building material categories, including decorative paints.

A new competitive force

UltraTech’s entry comes at a time when India’s organised wires and cables market is seeing strong demand from residential construction, infrastructure development and urbanisation. The presence of a major building materials company with an established national distribution network is expected to add another layer of competition to the sector.

For UltraTech, the immediate focus will be on scaling production, building market acceptance and establishing its brand among consumers and contractors. The performance of the new business will become clearer as revenue contributions and margins begin to emerge in the coming quarters.

The Jhagadia facility therefore represents more than a new manufacturing plant. It signals UltraTech’s ambition to expand from a core cement manufacturer into a wider building materials platform, bringing structural and electrical products closer together within its distribution ecosystem.
