Tamil Nadu government has initiated a huge rural infrastructure project to relay 3,005 km of rural roads in priority districts before the 2026 Assembly elections. The state’s rural development department has released two government orders (GOs) to begin the works under the Chief Minister’s Rural Roads Development Scheme.

The work will be taken up in several key districts such as Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Salem, Dindigul, and Trichy.

To ensure transparency and accountability, the government has made geo-tagging and geofencing of all the roads to be relaid mandatory, with GPS coordinates and live photo evidence. “This will enable map-based inspections and facilitate monitoring of the quality of work,” a departmental senior official said.

District collectors will be ensuring quality checks, where defects are identified and corrected at the time of execution. Safety measures like rumble strips, warning signs, and markers should be compulsorily fitted close to sensitive locations such as schools, hospitals, and markets.

The officials have also been directed to screen road eligibility carefully. Only roads aged five years and above will be eligible for relaying. Assistant engineers have been deployed to physically inspect and evaluate road damage levels.

There are environmental considerations included in the plan as well. The GOs mandate that tree planting should go hand in hand with relaying work. Saplings that are at least 6 feet high—tamarind, kodukapuli, neem, or pungan—will be planted at 8 to 12-meter intervals, at least half a meter away from the road edges to prevent visibility problems caused by traffic.

There is district-wise financing of the scheme by the Commissionerate of Rural Development. Work is to start within a month.

The action is seen as part of the government’s bigger push to improve rural connectivity, quality infrastructure, and safety standards ahead of the state elections next year.
