Tamil Nadu Plans 1,000-Acre AI City Near Chennai to Boost Research, GCCs and Innovation

Tamil Nadu is preparing to take a significant step towards strengthening its artificial intelligence ecosystem, with the state government likely to announce a renewed AI Mission alongside plans for a 1,000-acre AI City near Chennai. The proposal is currently under budget discussions, with officials consulting industry stakeholders and studying similar initiatives undertaken by other states.

According to people familiar with the development, the proposed AI City is expected to function as a self-contained ecosystem, bringing together AI research, model development, Global Capability Centres (GCCs), office spaces, startup infrastructure and modern residential amenities. Parks, sports facilities and social infrastructure are also expected to be integrated into the project, creating an environment designed to attract technology companies, researchers and skilled professionals.

The initiative is expected to be developed jointly by the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) and the state’s Industries Department. Officials indicate that the project will be distinct from the AI Park announced by the previous state administration, with a broader vision focused on creating an integrated technology and innovation ecosystem.

The government is also exploring a subsidised AI computing programme to help startups and independent developers access high-performance computing resources. Such a move could lower entry barriers for emerging AI companies while encouraging innovation across sectors including manufacturing, healthcare, education, logistics and financial services.

Tamil Nadu has already established itself as one of India’s leading manufacturing and engineering hubs. By expanding its AI infrastructure, the state aims to strengthen its position in knowledge-driven industries while attracting domestic and international investments. The proposed AI City is expected to support research collaborations, workforce development and the expansion of Global Capability Centres seeking specialised AI talent.

Earlier, state AI Minister R. Kumar had indicated that the government was evaluating multiple locations near Chennai for an AI City that could eventually expand beyond 3,000 acres. The broader vision also includes centres of excellence across several districts to promote AI education, skilling and research.

If announced, the AI City would represent one of Tamil Nadu’s largest technology infrastructure initiatives, supporting the state’s ambition to become a major destination for artificial intelligence development, advanced digital innovation and future-ready industries.
