Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made a sincere request to India’s steel industry—become future-ready, mine intelligently, and construct a stronger nation from scratch.
Addressing virtually the India Steel 2025 conference, PM Modi called on industry captains to expedite iron ore mining, particularly at idle greenfield locations, to boost steel production domestically. “Let’s create a robust, revolutionary, and steel-strengthened India,” he said, underlining the necessity to cut reliance on imports for raw materials.
He didn’t merely speak in terms of numbers—he spoke of a vision. A vision where India is not merely making more steel, but making it in smarter, cleaner, and more sustainable manners. He urged the industry to venture into coal gasification and utilize the nation’s own resources better rather than depending so much on imports, particularly coal.
The Prime Minister also urged the need to embrace innovation—asking businesses to embrace new technologies, try out higher grades of steel, and think at much bigger levels. “The world is changing quickly. India must not follow, but lead,” he stated.
International partnerships and strong supply chains, says Modi, will be the drivers of developing a future-proof steel industry. In an interconnected world, developing strong global relationships is as important as digging deeper domestically.
The industry has welcomed Modi’s remarks, with many saying it’s a much-needed push towards modernization and self-reliance. They agree that with the right policies, faster mining clearances, and bold thinking, India can rise as a true global leader in steel.
Modi’s message was clear: India’s growth story needs a strong foundation—both literally and economically—and steel is at the heart of it.
