The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has revived the long-awaited widening project of the Trichy–Karaikudi National Highway, bringing renewed momentum to one of Tamil Nadu’s important road infrastructure corridors. The project is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Tiruchirappalli, Pudukottai, Sivaganga, and Ramanathapuram districts while enhancing access to Trichy International Airport and key pilgrimage destinations such as Rameswaram.

The existing highway, comprising NH 336 and NH 536, has long been identified as a narrow and accident-prone stretch. It is also listed among the top high-risk highways in Tamil Nadu, making its upgrade a priority for both road safety and regional development.

According to officials, the alignment for the four-laning project between Trichy and Karaikudi has already been approved. The Land Plan Schedule process is expected to be completed within a month, paving the way for land acquisition activities across Trichy, Pudukottai, and Sivaganga districts. Once the required land acquisition reaches the mandated level, construction work can commence.

A key highlight of the project is the construction of two elevated corridors. One elevated stretch is planned near Mathur on the outskirts of Trichy, while another will be developed near a railway level crossing in Pudukottai. These structures are expected to reduce congestion, improve traffic flow, and enhance commuter safety.

The project will also include a railway overbridge at Karuveppilan in Pudukottai, addressing a long-standing demand from residents and road users. Another railway overbridge at Thiruvappur is also expected to move forward.

The revival of the Trichy–Karaikudi highway project is expected to strengthen trade, logistics, tourism, and industrial connectivity across southern Tamil Nadu. Improved road infrastructure will support faster movement of goods and passengers while contributing to the region’s long-term economic growth and development.
