BMW Industries Expands Steel Processing Operations in Bokaro

BMW Industries has commenced color-coated steel production at its Bokaro facility in Jharkhand, marking a new phase in the company’s steel processing expansion. The Kolkata-based manufacturer has commissioned the production line as part of an ₹800 crore investment programme aimed at strengthening its value-added steel portfolio.

The new line is part of a greenfield steel processing complex with a planned capacity of 500,000 metric tonnes. According to the company, the facility’s first phase includes the color-coating operation, with additional coating lines expected to be commissioned as the wider project progresses.

The development comes as demand for specialized steel products continues to expand across India’s construction, infrastructure, automotive, consumer goods and renewable energy industries. Color-coated steel is widely used in applications where surface protection, durability and appearance are important, including building components, roofing and industrial products.

Government Incentives Support Value-Added Steel Production

BMW Industries Managing Director Harsh Bansal said the new production line was established under the government’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Specialty Steel.

Introduced by the Ministry of Steel in 2021 with an allocation of ₹6,322 crore, the scheme aims to encourage domestic production of higher-value steel products, support technological development and strengthen India’s position across the steel value chain.

Color-coated steel consists of metal sheets or coils treated with protective metallic and organic paint coatings. These layers help improve corrosion resistance and provide a finished surface suitable for a range of industrial and building applications.

For steel processors, such products offer an opportunity to move beyond conventional processing and cater to customers seeking specialized materials for specific end uses.

Demand and Future Expansion

Bansal said demand for color-coated steel is increasing across infrastructure, construction, consumer goods, automotive, renewable energy and defence. BMW Industries currently serves the domestic market, while international expansion may be considered depending on market opportunities and demand.

The company is also planning additional coating lines as the Bokaro complex develops. Its ability to translate the expanded capacity into sustained production will depend on demand, customer acquisition and execution of the remaining project phases.

Separately, BMW Industries partnered with Indian Oil Corporation to supply piped natural gas to its Bokaro facility during January to March 2026.

The latest commissioning adds another value-added product to the company’s steel processing operations. It also reflects the broader industry focus on domestic manufacturing, specialized steel applications and capacity expansion to serve India’s growing industrial requirements.
